Preparing for a field visit
Trapview recommendations for any type of a field visit.
The first step before any field visit is to determine the cause of visit. There are a few different reasons why and they all require a slightly different preparation.
Reasons for field visits:
- Installation
- Sticky roll change
- Pheromone change
- Maintenance
- Troubleshooting
- Service
- End of season/Warehousing
Always check all traps in the area you're visiting to see if any others need your attention!
INSTALLATION
Steps to take:
Check, upgrade and test all the traps in the office before leaving for the field.

Prepare all needed tools
- Set a date and location with the clients representative
- Organize transport of traps needed for installation to the location
- Install the traps
- Perform one more operational test on the location to confirm proper functioning of the trap
- Take pictures of the trap, sensor and solar panel!
STICKY ROLL CHANGE
Steps to take:
- Check all traps in the area to see if any other need sticky roll change or other servicing
- Prepare the tools needed
- Essential toolkit
- Enough replacement sticky rolls (+ some extra just in case)
- A ladder if the SCM box is located high in the canopy

PHEROMONE CHANGE
Steps to take:
- Check all traps in the area to see if any other need sticky roll change or other servicing
- Prepare the tools needed
- Essential toolkit
- Pheromones (best to use locally sourced pheromones)
- A ladder if the trap is located high in the canopy
Do not forget to mark 'Change of lure (pheromone)' event in the 'Device events' tab of the webapp! Help → How to add events
MAINTENANCE
Steps to take:
- Check all traps in the area to see if any other need sticky roll change or other servicing
- Prepare the tools needed
- Clean the glass cover, clean the panel, check the panel for overshadowing, the state of sticky roll and pheromones and the firmness of all the wires
Be thorough as it can save you a lot of time if you don't need to make another trip to the area for something that could be done in the first visit
TROUBLESHOOTING
This is a pre-step of servicing and can be done by an untrained person aswell
- Check the trap, TRH sensor and the solar panel and their wiring.
- Take pictures of all components as they were and send them to the person responible for servicing
- Other steps determined by the type of issue with trap in question
SERVICE
Steps to take:
- Check all traps in the area to see if any other need maintenance
- Determine all the possible issues with the trap you'll be servicing beforehand (ask for help of Trapview Support team if needed)
- Prepare the tools needed
- Essential toolkit
- Additional spare parts depending on individual issue cases in question
- After successful servicing fill out the service excel file → Servicing report
END OF SEASON/WAREHOUSING
- End the monitoring period (guide to be linked here)
- By agreement with the client determine if the trap will be stored in a warehouse during the off-season or if it will stay in the field
- Traps stay in the field:
- check with the field manager if the trap won't be in the way of their off-season activities (e.g. winter pruning, plowing, etc.)
- Take out the old sticky roll so it doesn't stick to the trap during the rest period (don't forget garbage bags for old sticky rolls)
- Mark in the webapp that trap will stay in the field (guide to be linked here)
- Warehousing traps:
Prepare the tools needed → Essential toolkit + WH equipment
- Take pictures of the trap, TRH and solar panel positions to save time installing them back next season
Uninstall the traps and take out the sticky rolls
Put them in storage boxes
If you are not using the original corresponding Trapview box be sure to mark the serial number of the trap on the new one!
Store the boxes in a dry place or send them to service&refurbishing if needed
Mark the location of the warehouse or select 'Sent to servicing' in the Trapview webapp (guide to be linked here)
